Highly Inappropriate Tales for Young People
by Douglas Coupland and Graham Roumieu
Ever wonder what would happen if Douglas Coupland's unhinged imagination met Graham Roumieu's insane knack for illustrating the ridiculously weird? If you are over the age of consent, seriously weird or just like to laugh, you'll love the unlovable miscreants who unleash their dark and unruly desires on every page of these unsuitable, completely hilarious tales.

More New Graphic Novels!!

Smile by Raina Telgemeier
Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader. But one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth, and what follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached. And on top of all that, there's still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly. This coming-of-age true story is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever been in middle school, and especially those who have ever had a bit of their own dental drama.

The Wrong Place by Brecht Evans
Rendered in vivid water color where parquet floors and patterned dresses morph together, The Wrong Place revolves around the often absent Robbie, a charismatic lothario of mysterious celebrity who has the run of a city that is as chaotic as it is resplendent. Robbie’s sexual energy captivates the attention of men and women alike; his literal and figurative brightness is a startling foil to the dreariness of his childhood friend, Francis. With a hand as sensitive as it is exuberant, Brecht Evens’ first graphic novel in English captures the strange chemistry of social interaction as easily as he portrays the fragmented nature of identity. The Wrong Place contrasts life as it is, angst-ridden and awkward, with life as it can be: spontaneous, uninhibited, and free.

New Music This week

Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 by The Bestie Boys

Let's be honest, there aren't too many artists that can span three decades let alone make a profound impact on the world of music. These dudes were rapping back when hip-hop was just popping off! The Beastie's are a mixed bag. From party pioneers to doody-rhyme mad scientists, liberal social commentators that to this day can still sell out Madison Square Garden in minutes . The lyrical writing is fun like 'Pauls Boutique' , vocals tracked distorted and grimy like 'Ill Communication' layered over electronica a la 'Hello Nasty' with their heaviest hitting beats since 'Check Your Head.' As a matter of fact, I'd say this is their most hip-hop sounding album since their 92-94 era; A Fantastic Beastie Boys record!

R.I.P Adam Yauch

Drinking The Sun by The HIlltop Hoods

Adelaide's Hilltop Hoods have returned with an album that once again places them at the top of the Aus hip hop scene. It's called Drinking From The Sun.
Crafted over the last three years with a stack of DJs and special guests, expect nothing less than the Hood's razor sharp lyrics and some dynamo production.

Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded by Nicki Minaj

At her best, Nicki Minaj is, line for line, one of the wittiest, most creative rappers working today, either male or female. Her many personas and voices fly through her songs with joyful abandon, and she seems to be having so much fun astonishing us. On the first half of her second album, “Pink Friday ... Roman Reloaded,” the Trinidadian American rapper from New York City offers repeated evidence of her talents, and she delivers funny, biting, bawdy lines and rhyming couplets with apparent glee

Gandhi by Kazuki Ebine

Through his quietly powerful leadership and influential use of nonviolent resistance in India's struggle against the British Raj, Mahatma Gandhi became one of the most revered figures of the modern era. While history has recorded Gandhi's words and deeds, the man himself has been eclipsed by maxims of virtuosity that seem to have little resonance in our everyday lives. In Gandhi, the third volume in our exciting new manga biography series, created in conjunction with Emotional Content, Kazuki Ebine combines a gripping narrative with stunning illustrations to share Gandhi's inspiring and deeply human story with a whole new generation of readers.

Maurizio Salvati: 30" series

Head on Exhibition now @ Manly Library

Maurizio Salvati

Maurizio Salvati 30" series is inspired by the first photographic portraits of the 19th century, where the intense and serious look in the people's eyes was more the reflection of the physical effort to maintain the pose than their true character. 30" tries to recuperate this deep and extended moment between the sitter and the camera's lens. This prolonged stare transforms the lens' glass into a mirror where the photographic gaze is the subject's own.
Date of Show:
Thu, 3/05/2012 - Sat, 2/06/2012

NEW THIS WEEK

Ghost World by Daniel Clowes
From one of the most respected cartoonists of his generation comes a monumental work. The L.A. Weekly calls Clowes' comics "twisted and handsome". "Ghost World" follows the adventures of two teenage girls, Enid and Becky, who are best friends and are facing the prospect of growing up, and more importantly, apart. Both are naturalistic and nostalgic for the way things used to be in their lives. In "Ghost World", Clowes carves out a layered narrative out of the daily existence of these two girls and in the process, turns them into fully-realized young women.
